Two speed only works on one speed

i'm having the same problem as this topic. i hook one hot wire to the common wire coming off the toggle switch on the motor, and hook the other hot wire to terminal one. the white wire on terminal 2 and the yellow wire on terminal 3 or 4 are secure. when i supply power to the pump, when the toggle is in the 'up' position, the pump does nothing. when i switch the toggle to the 'down' position, the pump functions weakly for about 2 minutes, and then shuts off. my previous pump was a pentair challenger that ran on 230v. any suggestions?

It could be bad bearings. If there is a lot of load on the motor, high speed will overheat and low speed will stall.
