New pool lights

I have Alumnaire II lights in my inground pool. They are 120 volt lights. I want to replace them with LED lights. I found lights on Ebay from New Zealand that are nicheless and are a good fit. The lights only came with about six feet of electrical cord. My electrical breaker box is 40 feet away. The lights are 12 volt AC. I will be using a 120 to 12 volt transformer in the breaker box to power them. Is it safe to splice the wire realizing that the splice may be in water? I will be using a certified electrician to do this. He assures me that he can make a water proof splice and since it is low voltage there is no risk even if his splice were to fail sometime in the future. Does this sound safe and reasonable?

Thanks,
Bill
