How to get sand out of pool?

Filter was over filled with sand and now the bottom of the pool is covered with sand and the vacuum doesn't seem to do much but mix it up in the water. Should we vacuum on rinse? Or what?
    Thank You,

If the vacuum won't lift it, someone gets to get in with a whole bunch of silly putty and start picking it up manually.

If you get a whirlpool going, you might be able to get the sand to concentrate in the center, which could allow someone to try sweeping it into something and save the silly putty for the stragglers.

Vacuuming should take care of it.
