Tried the CYA test today with a Leslie DPD kit the mix stayed clear the black dot never disappeared.Not sure if I'm going about this right.
The water is really clear.

Assuming you mixed 50-50 with the reagent and pool water, it sounds like you have no CYA. Or it's below 20.

Two things can cause that:
1) You never added any, because there isn't any in tap water.
2) You had that elusive bacteria convert it to ammonia over the winter.

#2 seems unlikely, since it will use up any chlorine you add in a hurry.

Is this a fresh fill?

The solution is pretty simple. Use pool calculator to figure out how much stabilizer (CYA) you need to add, pour it in an orphaned sock or nylon (no holes!) and tie it off. Then tie the other end to something or even a full bleach jug and hang it in front of the return flow. Or tie it to a pool noodle and let it drift around suspended underneath.

Thank you! It is a fresh fill, we are new at this game (obviously). Okay, one more question.... when we shut our filter off and then turn it back on, the strainer basket pops up and the water does not feed properly into the filter causing a loss in pressure & air intake. Any suggestions?

It sounds like you have air trapped in the filter. While the pump is running, it's compressed. Shut the pump off, it expands and pushes water backwards through the pipes.

Hopefully there's an air bleed valve on top of your filter. Just open it while its running until all the air escapes and water starts squirting out.

1. Lower your pH to the mid 7's

2. Calculate and dose enough CYA to get to 40 ppm....don't test for it for at least five days.

3. You have a suction side air leak. Somewhere between the pump and the skimmer(s), air is being sucked into the system. Find that leak and your pump issues will be solved.
