Is it normal when opening the pump to clean the basket for water to go down below the the suction line of the pump and make a gurgling sound? The 3 way valve is off so water can not flow back into the pool also. Just noticed my ecostar done this earlier when cleaning out the strainer. It holds prime fine and there was no air bubbles before opening. Just didn't sound right.

Normal. You are allowing air into the system and water runs out of the returns which pulls water out of the filter.
