Hello all,

I'm new to the site and have been reading and racking my brain continuously the last several days as I'm planning/researching a pool build for my backyard to enjoy with the family and have decided on an Intex Ultra 22' x 52"as it's affordable, large, and readily available.

Planning this seems to be a bit overwhelming as I want to do it right the first time and have never done anything like this before. I think I have a pretty decent spot picked out (minus proximity to trees) and want to start leveling as seen in the pictures below:

I have several concerns:

1) Since the ground looks fairly level (to the naked eye, which means nothing) would it be safe to just clear the site of the footprint say 2", leveling it out, then fill with sand?

2) I assume I'll need to have an independent power outlet ran and installed at the site (about 40ft. to back of house)? Should I have this done first or wait until all is set in place? 220v? How many, two?

3) Deck - Should that be built ahead of pool, after, or does it really matter?

Anyway, I'm sure I'm thinking out loud more than I'm asking legitimate questions and that I'll find most of my answers.

Writing this intro is a way of settling my nerves since this seems to be quite an undertaking. Any insight and lessons learned, tips/tricks would be appreciated. Thank You :cheers:

Welcome to the forum. :lol:

1. Make sure you have planned for water to run away from the pool. If it can't escape, water will constantly be accumulating and you will have a 2" muddy pond. Level the site VERY accurately. you want to get within 1/2" of perfect for a really good install.

2. Others can provide a more complete answer. Someone will comment.

3. Most everyone adds decking after.

Everything is bigger in Texas I guess. LOL.

Thanks for the replies...I'm sure my questions are very common and I apologize for that, it's a little overwhelming and a lot more that I originally thought....such is life. Well worth the effort I suppose.
 
First, good luck on the build. Where are you at in Texas? My local Home Depot has a tool rental. If you can get a laser level it will take the guess work out. The thing is they are only as good as the setup on the tripod. If you don't have it setup right it will be off. Level the area for the pool plus a foot are two. Find the lowest spot and bring DOWN the high spots. I would run power after it's setup. You may or may not need 220 but I would bring out 220 just to have it in the future. You can get by with one and mount a pool sub panel. That will be a 4 wire run. 2 hots, 1 neutral, 1 ground. Then you can split that into 120 if needed. I would do the deck after. You need the room to work around the pool for setup.

Second on the laser level for DIY project. Dig it down......DON'T.........build it up! If it ain't right at the bottom it ain't gonna be right at the top and it will help the whole installation go smoother.
 
Yeah, I'm tracking the "Dig Down".

That paint line is out @ 25ft. so that's 1 1/2ft more around than the actual size from center. I had to remove a stump in the center and am curious what fill to use...gonna look into that today I think. I'll look around for a laser level as well. I'm not gonna get hot and heavy into this yet but will update photos as I progress.

I do worry about the distance to those trees. Leaves are such a pain to clean out of the pool. Did you select that spot to get some late afternoon shade perhaps? Is there any prevailing wind direction that may help blow leaves away from the pool?

The afternoon sun would be behind the fence where my garden is, which is why the garden is placed there (fence shades it during the hottest time of day).

I chose that spot mainly because it's relatively flat and because I really don't have anywhere else to put besides pulling up the patio pavers and having it smack in the middle, which I'm not to keen on. I like the idea of it being offset and not the focal point. I could move it further back towards that fence but that's my double gate and would prefer some room for getting my truck and/ or trailer through there. Besides, that's a potential parking spot for a boat. :D

I know the tree will be a pain but I don't want it to be a deal breaker.
