Lost some sand..

I opened the pool tonight and I started out on waste to dump the antifreeze out the backwash hose then I think I made the mistake and ran on backwash for 30 seconds and I lost a couple pounds of sand. Should I pickup a bag of sand and top off the filter?

There's 250 pounds of sand in your filter, so if you lost a couple... don't worry about it.

After dumping the antifreeze to waste should I have just switched it over to filter? Not sure why I started backwash since it was done before I closed it.

Even switching to backwash, you should not have lost more than a couple teaspoons worth of sand. When you backwash, does sand continuosly come out with the water? If so, that would indicate a problem.
When you said a couple of pounds I envisioned the amount of sand you could hold in two hands...

I would have to backwash again to test. Reevaluating again may 5lbs but nothing more.
