I just peeked under the cover. It looks like the water level went down a couple inches over the winter. Is this normal?

A couple of inches is nothing around here. Evaporation will account for that much. Even with a winter cover on.
Ok good. I guess I thought that since we had such a wet winter (even a hurricane), that the water level would have risen not gone down. Good to know that evaporation will happen even with the cover on.

I'm in New Jersey as well, and my water was much higher than when I closed. When I closed, it was below the skimmer boxes. When I opened it was also above the top of the skimmer box. I have a mesh safety cover... not sure what type of cover you have, but you may want to keep an eye out for a leak.
Same here in NJ -- Water was at top of my skimmer due to the heavy rains over the last couple of weeks. I had to lower the water right after opening.
Where could it be leaking from when the pool is not running and water is below the skimmer?
I wouldn't think it is a leak. I am also in NJ, and have lost a few feet of water. I have a solid winter cover, but water from the pool comes through and with the hot days we had a few weeks ago, evaporates.
Just pulled my winter cover off tonight and water is much lower than it was last fall when I closed...I'm sure the 12"+ of water I had to pump off the cover was the culprit as well as evaporation.
