What is a good depth for the shallow zone of a pool

We are going to build a inground L shaped pool and was wondering what depth is a good depth for the shallow leg. The dimensions of the pool will be 45 x 20 and 36 x 18. The 36 x 18 leg will be the shallow area. We just received the engineering drawing and they have it at 3 1/2 feet at one end tapering to 4 1/2 at the other end. I had the impression that it would be 3 1/2 all the way . We would like this area for playing volleyball, basketball and catch etc. 4 1/2 seems a little deep. Is tapering this area standard? Is 3 1/2 feet adequate or to shallow? What do you think? We are just an average size family with 3 kids ages 12 to 18. Your insights are always welcome. :-D

Elwood58,

If the tapering is for drainage I like your layout better, 3 1/2 at each side and taper to the middle to 4 1/2. Thats a better design then the way we have it now. Food for thought. Looking for that happy medium between to shallow and to deep, if it exists!!

Thanks for your kind response.
