Howdy All! How often should pump sand be changed? We have an AGP, 2 HP Haywood pump. Pool was installed in 2009 and sand has never been changed; we back wash when pressure gets high. We have a yellow bug critter cleaner, but it has become increasingly worse at doing its job. It does not reach to all areas of the pool anymore, and loses power and has to be repositioned and coaxed to continue working. We had it repaired once, but are thinking now of getting a different auto cleaner. The guy at Leslie's pool supply was trying to help us diagnose the problem and said maybe it's time to change the sand.

You don't need to replace the sand unless it has become badly clumped. However, it does sound like it is time to clean and resettle the sand bed. The procedure is described in this post.
