Pressure dropping when trying to vacuum

I'm having a problem with pressure dropping sufficiently when trying to vacuum the pool. Does anyone have any suggestions of why this is happening? And can you recommend any pool repair company in the phoenix, arizona area?

    Welcome to TFP!

Do you mean the pressure reading on the filter is dropping? Or do you mean you are losing suction through the vacuum?

Both. The pressure on the filter drops and the pressure or suction drop too. Prior to the drop when you put your hand over the area where the vacuum hose would goes the suction is so great it almost feels like it could suck your hand into the opening.

How long does it take for this to happen? is there anything getting clogged in your pump basket? Is the vacuum hole itself possibly getting jammed with leafs, twigs, etc?

It sounds like your loosing prime on your pump, this could be something as easy to deal with as lubricating the gasket on the strainer cover, or could be broken pipe under ground needing major work to repair. Before calling anyone in you might want to check the easy ones, you can try shaving cream around the fittings on the pump hoses / cover to see if it gets sucked into the pump (watch for soap bubble on the return jets also).

Re: Pressure dropping when trying to vacuum

    Is this a new problem?

Is the filter pressure (without the cleaner) higher or lower than it has been before?

Have you tried to clean/backwash your filter?

It is normal for filter pressure to drop some when attaching a suction side cleaner but it would be good to get some history.

This has been going on for nearly a year now.

The filter pressure is lower than it has been before.

I have cleaned the filter and backwashed.

Re: Pressure dropping when trying to vacuum

Lower filter pressure than normal (without the cleaner attached), combined with lower suction than normal would point to either a suction side blockage or an impeller blockage.

Remove the pump basket and check the pump impeller inlet at bottom and make sure it is clear. If clear move to next check.

While the pump basket is out, put a hose into the pipe inlet near the top of the basket, wrap the hose with a rag and try to seal the hose, then turn the hose on. See if any debris is forced out of the skimmer.

If neither of those works, then the next step would be to disassemble the pump to visually inspect the pump impeller.

you can also remove the pump basket lid, put a hose in there turn it on, then turn the pump on for a few seconds. If the water doesnt get sucked down immediately than you more than likely have a clogged impeller
