Broken Polaris booster pump

Hey guys,
So I bought a new PB4-60 booster pump and hooked it up about two weeks ago. Everything seemed to be working fine for a few days. Then I went outside one day and noticed that the pump was dripping water from a hole in the bracket. The mechanical seal appeared to be leaking. I pulled off the volute to see if there was anything amiss, and I found that the center of the impeller where it connects to the shaft was completely shredded. I can't even unscrew the impeller from the motor shaft because it just spins on the threads. Needless to say, my Polaris is no longer functioning.

I called the shop where I bought the pump, and they sent me a replacement one. That's all well and good, but I'd really like to understand what happened. Anyone have any ideas?
