Digital Wall Switch for pump?

We're having an in-ground 18x36 installed this spring. The pool builder quoted a 1hp pump and a 250k BTU NG heater. I understand that the NEC requires that the pump and heater be on timers, and it seems that nearly everyone uses an outdoor mechanical switch, such as this:

Assuming there's an emergency shutoff within 5' of the pump, and the pump is single speed, is there any reason the outlet the pump is plugged into couldn't be switched indoors, and to fulfill the timer requirement use a single-pole digital wall switch, like this:

Question goes with regard to the pump and the heater both.

Nothing in NEC requires the use of a timer. Having a timer is a great idea, but it is not required.

The digital wall switch you link to is rated for a maximum of 500W, and just about any pool pump draws more than that.

You're right on both counts. I was looking at this post (http://goo.gl/3nsfQ) but I now realize that they were discussing the ICC (I think).

It seems like having the timer inside would be a convenience. Is there any downside to that approach?

An indoor timer usually means significantly longer wiring runs, which means heavier more expensive wire. However, how much longer, if at all, would depend on your specific situation. Plus, you don't really change settings on the timer very often, so it doesn't make a significant difference for most people.
