What sort of pump works good for draining the pool

What sort of pump works good for draining the pool to about a 1/2 drain?

Sump/waste pump. Cheap ones at harbor freight or home depot rents them.

If you have a floor drain and it is isolated from the skimmer, you could use the pool pump, but have to ensure that no air is pulled into the pump.
