LED rope lights?

Our pool builder doesn't recommend LED rope lights but we have a large wet deck/ tanning ledge with a table in it and I think it would look cool to have it lit up - we may not do this now but I'm wondering if we should run electrical for options later?

Unfortunately, you can't have anything like that within 10 feet (horizontally) of the water.

Is that because these are most often 120v - is this prohibited if low voltage?

Yes, still not allowed, though some may tell you it should be.

The electrical code is fairly restrictive. With only a few exceptions that don't apply here, only listed underwater light fixtures are allowed within 10 feet, regardless of voltage.

Got it - so even if above water line they have to be rated for below water line install if within 10' - I didn't realize that.

An (expensive) alternative is fiber optic perimeter lighting. It uses an illuminator in an electrical box that is the required distance from the pool. A covered fiber optic bundle carries the light to the pool and connects to an uncovered fiber optic that runs around the pool. Looks really cool. Safe and energy efficient, but not cheap. On my wish list. Here's a link to a typical system:

Here is a thread where bidDave160 used glow in the dark tiles. I think this is a great idea and would love to have something like this.
