I wouldn't add salt now. I think that it's best to leave the salt system off for the winter and use liquid chlorine until it warms back up.
Agree with JamesW. Check your manual for your SWCG for the exact numbers but most units won't even attempt to generate chlorine in water colder than 55. If you do want to get some chlorine in there now though, you can always safely add some to the water manually. Bleach is good for that.
The salt measurement that it uses to tell you how much to add is not reliable when the water is cold, thus better to wait till things warm up.
