Caretaker 99 in ground system: I am new to this system. The pop up heads: is there a specific way they the jet should point from one end of the pool to the other.

Welcome to TFP.
Those heads should rotate themselves a bit every time they pop up, so there's no aiming them in a certain direction. If they're not rotating, they need to be removed, cleaned and reapired/replaced if needed.

Bama's got it right; they should rotate each time they pop up. The heads aren't synchronized with each other in any way either; i.e. all pointing the same way at once.
Actually they rotate every time they go down, not up.
Per the original install instructions they all should start pointing the same direction. I personally start them all pointing at the main drain, helps keep debris from building up around it. If you think about it, it makes sense that they sweep together clockwise. They rarely stay that way.
Dont forget there is a screen above the water valve that has to be cleaned.

Yes it is always best to start the floor heads all pointing towards the drain. This stops the heads "fighting" against each other when squirting out the water jets.
Ideal, yes; realistic in the long term, no. As soon as people get in and start stepping on them like whack-a-mole, they'll be pointing every which way!
