On occasion I help with a large in ground pool. I operated the pool for 3 years with no problems. I was there the other day to help with pump seals and found that the Hayward Pro Series sand filter was cracking at the seams. The pressure gauge was pegged and stuck. I suspect the current operator has not been back flushing soon enough. A few months ago I found the gauge at 55 #'s.
Would this be enough to cause the tank to split?

Most residential pool equip is rated for 50 psi. That's usually not a problem as most pumps are only able to develop about 40 psi.

I'd suspect a bad gauge first. But that doesn't answer your question.
What model filter is it?
What model pump is it?
Is there more than one pump?
What is the normal filter pressure?
