Rubber plug, sizing question.

Most of the rubber plugs that I have are color coded but I don't know what the colors mean, maybe they don't mean anything? Regardless, how do you know which plug to use in which size of line? My skimmer plug always seems to work, but I am skeptical as to whether it is the right size. It goes almost completely inside the pipe, which is maybe OK but seems odd.

the wingnut colors are somewhat new, it just makes it easier to read than looking for the tiny number on the plug. the plug should fit 3/4ths into the hole without any compression added. The plug you have will probably work but they are designed to stick out a bit.
