Well I now have no idea as to what could be underground now. I decided to do a bit on an exploration dig around the skimmer. From what I can see with the bucket full I took out there is a flexy pipe from the skimmer outlet (I expect to be) in a U shape to a 40mm elbow headed towards the shed, then it joins onto another piece of pipe with a threaded join, then another join just after that, and beyond that I do not know as my arm could not reach any further.
I can see that someone has tried to stop another leak in the same area from the skimmer, but have no idea as to what could be below ground now.
I might do some more digging next week after work as daylight savings starts this weekend, and I have family due here soon for the rest of the weekend.
