FC loss

Hi-

I finished the shock process on 8/25. cya 65ish, CC either .5 or less. My question is loss since then

8/25
FC 22
at 6:40am

at 9:50pm
FC 13.5

8/26
9:00pm
FC 6.5 took back to 10

8/27
9;00pm
FC 3.5 took back to 10, closed pool a bit later

Today the pool had royal blue auto cover on until 1:30pm. 2 hours later checked FC was 6.

is this normal?

Also cleaned out pump pot looked in the chlorinator(has been empty for weeks) there was a sludge in it? residue from the sticks? had it really cranked up before.

Were you passing the OCLT?
Are you sure your CYA is that high?
Loosing ~7ppm every day is pretty high. Loosing 2-4ppm is more "normal"

i had passed the OCLT so let it drift back to normal. thinking i would take it to 10 at night and then would be good. pretty sure we are 65-70. rain coming this weekend possibly so hoping to bring down.

any thoughts on sludge?

I agree with jbliz...that FC loss seems a bit high for my liking...especially with your relatively high cya level. I would do a OCLT tonight, just to see if anything is growing.

Are you using Trichlor? Is the "sludge" hard and white or is it something else?

was using the tricolor a lot. I quit a few weeks ago-maybe a month. It is not hard. it was easy to wipe out with paper towels. just like a sludge but whiteish. binder in sticks?

Being that its white I would say its probably just Trichlor residue and nothing to worry about.
