I was not aware of this until reading on several reseller sites today - Is it true the Gizzmos are only good for one season? If so, what is the reasoning behind this? CYA or ??

I think that the premise of the Gizzmo is to help reduce skimmer damage by absorbing the expansion of ice. However, I'm not sure that that premise is valid.
I think that if there were any ice, it would expand away from the Gizzmo. Therefore, the Gizzmo should rarely be crushed. At best, the Gizzmo might reduce the potential for damage by reducing the amount of ice available to expand.
I think that a gallon milk jug, partially filled with sand, would do a better job, because it would make a bigger hole in the ice.
If they are damaged, then they probably should be replaced. If they are not damaged, then they should be reusable.
