Everyone here is confident the right balance of chlorine and CYA can kill anything in my pool.
My pool algae challenges you to a duel……”wooo hoooo haaa haa hee hee heh heh”
is what I heard when told my algae I was reading your site.
Me;
Use a Talyor 4 test kit (FC, TC, Ph,ALK) and strips for (CYA, CH, Phosphates)
20K gal “Grecian” rectangular pool, vinyl, Hayward sand filter, Hayward pump, Hayward inline chlorinator using 3” trichlor tabs;
I’ve owned the house/pool since 2002.
- Central, Connecticut.
Current stats aug 11,2012;
Taylor liquid; FC = 5, TC = 5, PH=7.2,ALK=60,
Test strips;CYA approx 30ish,CH approx 250ish, Phosphates approx 700ish.
The challenger;
Green water, a little green slim on the steps and bottom,
not visibly adhering and growing on the vertical sides, nor in skimmer, nor on return fittings;
current crop has been around a week.
The challangers habits;
First arrived in august of 2010.
Only comes around when the water temp > 80 (meaning mid august)
Shows up fast – seems to double overnite.
In past hasn’t respond to shocking, yellow out, green to clean.
Responds to shock when water temp drops below 80 and then doesn't reappear until following year.
this year continues to grow with;
CYA of about 30, FC much > 10, PH < 7.0, Alk < 80
Past years it has puzzled me, “Leslies” staff and my professional pool maintenance mgr.
My current experimental plan;
Buy liquid test kit that can measure high FC and CYA better then strips
Use yellow out and your CYA/Chlor chart and Phosfree at same time.
Back wash/clean sand filter
1) drop chlorine to 2ppm for yellow out application using chlorine nuetralizer
2) Add 2 gals of muriatic acid to drop ph below 6.8
(anticipating it will rise with 73% cal-hypo)
3) Add yellow out,
4) Add 3L phosfree
5) then per your chart – if my CYA is 30/40 need FC of 18-24 add 5 lbs of 73% cal-hypo
6) monitor hourly to make sure FC >19
7) Brushing 2-3 times a day, running pump 48 hours, then back wash,
8) Assuming pool is not green - let pool settle to bottom - vacume dead buggers to waste.
or Continue testing FC/PH/ALK/CYA running pump/back washing/brushing till not green.
The current bloom history;
July 31 - Clarity, slightly milky cloudy, visibility about 40 ft
Very small amounts of green algae in a few corners
Tc 3.0,Fc 3.0,Ph 7.3,Alk 110
running pool pump daily 6-10 hours,
Aug 1 shocked pool over night with 2lbs leslie power powder 73% cal-hypo
Brushed, ran pool pump about 12 hours over night
Aug 2, no signs of algae,
Small pile of dead algae in deep end corner,
Due to currents this is where material collects when the pool settles out
Clarity the same, slightly milky cloudy, visibility of about 40 ft
Aug 3 morning Clarity, slightly milky cloudy, visibility of about 40 ft,
no signs of algae
Tc 5, Fc 5, Ph 7.5, Alk 120
Added 1 gal of muriatic acid with pool pump running to drop ph and alk
and left pump running and chlorinator off for 8 hours. Brushed pool.
Aug 3 evening;
Light Greenish yellowish algae film on all pool surfaces
Clarity milky cloudy, visibility of about 20 ft
Brushed pool
Ran pump another 8 hours
Aug 4 midday;
Per leslies staff
