Aqua Trol and new water in pool

Hello, we are fairly new to this pool thing. We had to replace our liner in a 1 year old pool. We drained the pool and got the liner in. We upgraded the swg to a Hayward Aquatrol. In the instructions, it says you should not start the Aquatrol until the water is balanced. This seems kind of strange since this is what you buy it for. Anyways, do we use chlorine pucks first to get the chlorine in and go ahead and add the salt to the pool?

Kind of confused about this. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks!

You need to add the proper amount of salt to the pool, and run the pump for 24 hours before switching on the SWG. Without stabilizer in the pool, the SWG will not be able to keep up. You will also need chlorine in the water while everything else is getting up to speed. So, buy salt, stabilizer to get you to 70 ppm (do not go too far), and some liquid chlorine to get sanitizing started while you wait to turn on the SWG.

Also have some Muriatic Acid on hand for pH adjustments. With this method of chlorination, pH is likely to go up, but rarely down.

Ok, thank you for the quick reply. Any idea on the amount of stabilizer and chlorine it would take to start out?

Now is a good time to check out The Pool Calculator.

I get 120 oz by weight or 125 ounces by volume to raise a 15,000 gallon pool to 60 ppm of CYA.

Another thing needed is a good test kit. A good kit will save time, money and headaches. A test kit with the FAS-DPD is nearly impossible to find in stores. The TF-Test Kit is the best bang for the buck out there.
