baking soda has little effect on pH. Read pool school article for "recommended pool chemicals"

Thank you for the recommended reading. Before I went to our pool store , I put in 1/4 cup of baking soda and let it circulate for 30 minutes. Guess what? It raised the ph and ta! Then off to the store with a sample. They sold me First Aid as a solution to my dead algae that was the problem. Now the wait and see what happens. It's been 2 hours and no change yet. Patience is a virtue.
 
Whatever they sold you was likely not needed...hope it was cheap.

There is no magic bullet. Just chlorine and filtering.
