Heater maintenance?

We have a natural gas heater. How often are we supposed to open it up and clean it?
Is it hard to do? We aren't handy so should we get a pool store/company to do it?
Are there specific things to do to it for maintenance - it is 5 yrs old and works fine.

Not sure of your area, but a local heating contractor would be better suited to service these. They are similar to a home heating boiler and their training is far superior to what some pool store employees have.
