Thanks. We are just happy to have a finished pool. Now the fun landscaping and fence starts. We have to build a retaining wall probably 40 feet long and around 2 foot high on the top side where our pergola will be going. Also things about staining the concrete when it cures in a few weeks.

Well we had our 1st visitor by the pool. Didn't think they would show up this quick. He was sliding on the concrete by the stairs. My wife and I are terrified of snakes . I always told her if I found one in the skimmer I was blowing a hole through it with a shotgun. Luckily this one slide off the cement in a few minutes and met a shovel. Hope when we get a privacy fence up we will not see to many.

The setup for football Saturday, redneck style. Have to wait a few more weeks before we can drill into the cement to build the gazebo.

Kyle-

Saving 8-10K should put a smile on your face! I know it would for me!

When your done I would love to see your actual costs for future reference.

Do you have big rain coming in soon?

Pool builder proposal:

36x16
20ml liner
8ft step
Swim out with 4 jets
1.5 hp single speed pump
3.1 sqft sand filter
Aqua right SWG no automation or Subpanel
1.5" plumbing
Ball valves
700 sqft concrete. $3 extra per sqft
Electrical not included

$29000

Our build

36x16 Grecian
8ft step with 2 jets
28ml liner
Cozy cove swim out with 6 jets
Ecostar variable speed pump
4.8 sqft sand filter
$7800

Labor and material for dig, pool Krete bottom, liner install, 7 yards of concrete for footer
$9000

4 deck jets $200
Aqua plus with automation and Subpanel $900
2" plumbing $400
4 jandy valves$120
1300 sqft concrete $3000
Electrical $700

Various material, sand, salt- $400

$22,520

So we saved about $6500 but got a good bit of upgrades and almost double the concrete. All in all with equipment and concrete upgrades it is a little over $10,000 in savings.

Not sure what type that was but most snakes are beneficial, unless rats, mice and gophers are preferred. I'm always happy to see them in my yard, that said there are virtually no venomous snakes in my area, besides pacific rattlers but I have never seen one at my house. Most snakes in the US that are venomous have a distinct "triangle" shaped head that gets noticeably smaller at the neck as opposed to a more slender head.

I really don't know what kind it was. It's a dead one now though. I am not the type to see what shaped head it is before I decide if I am going to chop its head off. As far as mice and rats go, that's why I pay pest control every month. But venomous or not they still bite if stepped on or bothered and still could cause problems with bacteria. So I would prefer to not have them any where near where people will be barefooted and let the pest control deal with rats and anything else they may eat. Just my opinion though.

We have found some water proof repellant to spread around the yard that is suppose irritate them and drive them away. I don't think we will have a problem with them though. We have been here for a year and a half and this is the 1st we have seen.

I suspect that was a "harmless" juvenile eastern ratsnake. I would personally prefer to toss that snake out of the yard and not have it scaring the wife - but in the heat of the moment I can see why it might die. This site is very useful for determining what is harmless and what isn't: http://www.virginiaherpetologicalsociet ... erhead.asp

I run into a lot of Copperheads in my yard - not where the pool is located (another house) - my dogs alert me when they get a certain hysterical tone to their barking... I've killed a dozen over the last 5 years I'd guess. Having kids I don't suffer them to be in my yard if they make themselves known but I don't go hunting them. If they don't come out and harras the dogs or kids they live in peace with me - however I would love to know about this repellant - I'm not familiar with it and it could be useful to me.

Now if I would have seen this snake away from my house I would have not killed it. This snake though was 15 feet from my back door in between my house and pool. Should I have just moved it? Maybe but I can not identify snakes on the fly and my family and pets are more important to me than not killing a harmless snake. Just my opinion though.

The repellant is called snake away.

Also have read granule sulfur bought at hardware and garden places will also help. Don't know if either work though. Will tell next spring.

I'm very interested - please try to remember to let us know if it does work. Also I'd be reluctant to use sulfur - that will not smell good at all! EUCK!

As for the Snake ID on the fly - I'm good at Copperheads after a lot of practice starting in childhood but I completely understand that it is hard to do quickly if you don't have the experience. The site I sent you to helps - but if the repellant works and you don't see a lot of snakes you'll never get good at it - which I suspect would be a good thing from your perspective <LOL>!

Will do! You are right the less snakes I see the better for me and probably for them if they are near my house. Forgot to mention we have a 6 pound shorkie (shi-zu yorkie mix) and he loves to play fight with stuffed animals so I could only imagine what he would think a snake was.

Started the fence this weekend. Started with a gas powered auger and about burnt up the motor. We gave rocky clay type soil. You can see one post is higher than the others by a noticeable difference. We hit solid rock on that one. Dad brought his tractor down with a auger on the back and didn't do to much better as the blades were to old. Called a guy down the road and he had one that worked like a charm but digs holes way to big. Instead of using about half a bag per post now we are using one bag per hold along with some extra gravel. Got 22 posts up after wasting half a day Saturday and a few hours Sunday figuring out the best way to dig the holes. Should be able to get the rest up Saturday.
