Would this work to vacuum an inground pool?

I've maintained my parent's pool for the last 20 years or so and am thinking about creating a vacuum as seen here and on other sites (for example, ... 2#comments).

This does seem a bit expensive, so I was wondering if anyone has ever tried an above ground filter/pump combination to vacuum an inground pool. The pool is 16x32, about 8 1/2 ft in the deep end. Would a setup such as the below link have the power/ability to pump water, or does it strictly need to be below the water level? Not necessarily this exact combo, but something similar w/ a 1HP pump and cartridge filter.
I'm just thinking of a way that would get the job done without vacuuming through the sand filter, as we've been doing previously. Thanks in advance. ... p/20452365

Many above ground pumps aren't able to prime when they are above the water surface, although some will.

What problem are you having using the pool's filter for vacuuming?

Thanks for your reply. I figured that would be the case.
It's not so much a problem, it's just that we have a lot of sediment (dirt/sand) on the bottom of the pool and sucking that up is a bit difficult. And also not having to run the garbage through the sand filter is a plus!

You'd either need to find a manual or call the mfg and ask what the lift is on that pump. It may well be plenty for your needs.
