Our skimmer has a plate that can pivot to restrict the flow to the pump or restrict the flow at the equalizer line. We have had the plate in a position that does not restrict either line. Have run this way for 2 seasons without any known problems. The pool is now getting refinished and would like to know if we can improve the skimmer function by using the restrictor (or not) when we get the "new" pool up and running. Thanks!

A simple restrictor plate is best left out of the way unless you are doing something special. For example when vacuuming you might want to close off the skimmers that are not connected to the vacuum to give you more suction. There are fancier float valves that can be handy occasionally, they switch the suction to the equalizer line automatically when there isn't enough water in the skimmer, which prevents air from being drawn into the pump.

You need a diverter if there are two pipes in the bottom of the skimmer. One pipe goes to the pump and the other comes from either a main drain or a second skimmer. The diverter controls how much of the water going to the pump comes from the skimmer and how much from the main drain. Open it all the way and it's all skimmer. Close it fully and it's all main drain.
Thanks for the quick replies! The skimmer has two pipes. One, an equalizer going to the pool wall, and the other that goes to a pump then to a Paramount PCC2000 in-floor cleaning system. No filter. I will keep the restrictor as it is.
