I'm sorry to revive this old post... But I just installed my new pool and using a hayward pump and hayward DE filter. I have never had a pool before, but knew the filter must need some type of cleaning. I don't know if it has ever been done, but I want to clean it before hooking it up. Is automatic dish washer detergent still the recommended solution? If so, What should I go buy? Any other tips? I'm going to rinse the fingers, and soak over night then rinse and put back together. Seems pretty basic. Am I missing anything?

Ordinary powdered automatic dishwasher detergent, one cup of automatic dishwasher detergent for every five gallons of water. Not the new liquids or the tablets. There are several brands, they all work.

It is very simple, and you described it correctly. :)
