I have a small inground pool with one jet. I have finished getting everything ready to open the pool, even filled it with water, but I cant seem to budge this silly jet plug! It is square, and the threading to screw it into the wall have some white tapey stuff on it...I tried cutting away and peeling the tapey stuff off, and tried using pliers to squeeze and turn it, but I don't think I am strong enough. Am I missing something? I am reaching from above it to try to unscrew it, the water is yucky and cold and I really don't want to have to get in it...any help is greatly appreciated!

It's a winterizing plug. You can try using a large adjustable wrench on it. Sometimes squeezing it with pliers only makes it tighter.

Oh no, I hope I didn't make it tighter!!! I tried an adjustable wrench but I couldnt tighten it very well under water... 
Anyone have any advice for this? I’m having the same issue. The wing nut broke the bolt is stripped and this plug isn’t moving. I’ve tried pliers but it doesn’t budge.
