older astral multi port valve

My valve is very difficult to turn, I suspect it has sand in it. I pulled so hard on it that now the head came off. It used to be attached by a small white clip on the side. Now I look at the valve and wonder can I replace the spider thingy and somehow clean the sand out of it, or does it sound like I need the replacement.??

Anyone go thru the problem with an old worn multi port valve?

Maybe the roller pin that the handle pivots on or the spring underneath just needs greasing? The white clip should be just a snap/lock mechanism to engage when it is screwed all the way down and in the right position. I'd sure replace the gasket first and see how it works.
