We just opened our pool last Friday and I thought it seemed louder than before. This is the pump's third year. At first I thought I'm just not used to the sound after a long winter break. In any case I noticed the pump is leaking from the bottom and did some research and I understand a seal is the most likely culprit. Can this also account for the louder pump? It sounds sorta normal but maybe a higher pitched kinda whir to it. I watched some of the videos on youtube showing worn bearing and it does not sound like that.

While you're replacing the seal you can replace the bearing in the shaft end of the motor. What you're hearing is most likely the bearing. It's worth replacing it while you have it apart.
