Hayward Sand filter laterals

I am replacing the sand in my hayward 244t sand filter. I noticed when I removed the lateral assembly that there was sand in the
  • the laterals
  • the joint between the laterals and the central pipe
  • the hollow portion in the center where all the laterals are connected

After disassembly I noticed that the ball and socket of the laterals have striations from the sand, is this normal?

While the laterals look fine to me , I am at a loss as to how the sand got into the assembly. I also wonder if the striations are creating a gap
wide enough for the sand to pass through. Do you think that the entire assembly need to be changed?

Thanks

Usually, if the laterals and the up pipe are sound, the sand came in during back washing with the sand slightly too high.

Score marks on the balls not unusual with older filters. I wouldn't worry if, when you removed the lateral assembly, the laterals themselves were tight.
