Circulation/suction loss

How often should sand be replaced in a filter? Is it easy to do? My VERY green pools pump seems to lose suction
after about an hour of running.Backwashing seems to restore temporarily

I sounds like you may be equating the old sand to the reason your pool is not clearing. They are not related. Your filter is losing suction because it is doing what it is supposed to do but there is so much junk going in to it, it is clogging up very quickly.

You have to kill that algae with chlorine first and then use your filter to clear it up. Backwashing frequently is part of that clearing process.
