filter air strainer

I know this is an easy question, but I have been working in this industry for years and still don't know the "official" purpose of the air strainer/siphon loop/whatever else you want to call it that is on the top grid manifold in filters. What is it for? lol Thanks in advance and please keep the laughing to a minimum.

It keeps air from creating vibrations in the filter and breaking parts, sort of an equalizer. Often seen in side mounted DE and sand filters.

If we didn't let the air out of the tank, it would shake itself apart without the screened hose.
