Newbie - Vacuum Skimmer Question

So, I've just bought a house with a pool and I'm a complete newbie at all things pool related... except swimming in them
I've tried to vacuum it but there doesn't seem to be enough suction, I have two skimmers, my question is "Is it OK to 'close off' one skimmer it give additional suction to the other?

Not only ok, but preferable. I'd start by partially closing it off if you can and see if you get enough suction like that. If not, it's ok to close it off completely.
