Okay so I was just looking at my heater and I noticed when I turn on the gas shut off before it, I smell a gas right around the valve area. I of course shut it off but does that mean the valve is bad or do i have options for a fix?The valve is in the off position when i notice it.

Yikes ... not something you want to take any chances with. You could do a little testing with some soapy water to see if you can find where it is leaking.

Might be good to bring the Pros in though.

There should be another valve near to meter you can shut off for doing repairs.

What type valve is it. If it's a standard gas shutoff valve I'd just have it replaced. It's most likely leaking out the plug. Lubing it might work but that's not a chance I'd want to take. Besides I'm sure you don't have any gas valve lube lying around or you wouldn't be asking that question. :)
