I have just started using a solar pool cover which has strong edging. but the coping stone around the pool is quite rough. so each time i wind in, or take out the cover from the roller the cover is rubbing rather viciously against the coping. any ideas?

Is your cover on the end of the pool? If so, you can move it forward a short distance so the cover doesn't drag on the coping while you use it, then move it back into position when done.
Thanks i have it forward but the Edges chaffe on each side of the pool between the water and the roller i am experimenting with two pieces of tarpaulin at the point i mention and it seems to be working.
Does your coping protrude above the water? If so, your tarp solution might be your best choice.
