Run the bucket test to see exactly how much is evaporation and how much is leakage. Once you've done that run it again with the pump on or off (which ever is opposite the initial test) and see if there's a difference. After that, plug the inlets and outlets in the pool and see if that makes a difference.

It would be nice if you'd add your info to your sig so we can see what type of pool and equipment you have.

I have a related question,I have a 17000 gal inground and have noticed all summer that i'm losing about an inch and 1/2 of water for a one week period,my question is how much water evaporates in a weeks time at 90-95 degree temps with a breeze everyday? Seems every weekend i have to add water.

thanks

That depends very much on the humidity. At high humidity there will be very little evaporation. At very low humidity there can be more than 1.5 inches a week.

thanks Jason, has been very dry here in Texas this summer,so you think there's no reason to worry about a small leak and its just evaporating?

To keep the effects of evaporation out of this test, fill a bucket with water, mark the level of the water in the bucket, set it on the stairs and compare the water loss between the pool level and the bucket level.
