How to Seal Skimmer for Winter

I have a skimmer seal which is basically one piece inside the pool over the skimmer with a rubber gasket and a piece in the skimmer box which screws shut. In order for it to work, I need to take the skimmer door (weir?) off. How do I remove this piece? Within the pool, there seems no simple way other than disassembling the skimmer. There may be an easier way approaching it from the outside of the pool, but I haven't checked that out yet. Any ideas here? Any help is appreciated. Thanks.

Some weirs have bendy notches to remove them. Some require the removal of the skimmer faceplate entirely. Could you post a picture?
