Is there a way I can use a standard plain jane hose instead of the questionable one that come with it with the fancy twist on thing?

You will need an adapter. They have one available for the Zodiac leaf catcher which will work for the female cuff. Best to go to a pool store like a Leslie's where they have adapters from all the manufacturers and will help you select suitable connectors for regular hose. What is the reason you don't like the twist lock version? From my understanding it is a higher quality hose with a total airtight seal and designed so it will not separate over time which can happen to ordinary suction hose.
