Our pool is beautiful now for landscaping and a new deck. Our aquired pool is 18 ft round with one side about a foot or two below the ground. should we dig it out and put a retaining wall or is dirt/rock okay against the outside metal? How long do we have before it rusts out? Pool is already 8 yrs old.

Impossible to answer....too many variables. That said, metal and water don't mix well as you know.
Mine is buried 2 feet because of a decision I.............err.................( my wife made).......and it'll last as long as it lasts I guess! Sometimes you just have to do what works out best in your situation. There are several members here with partially buried AGPs.
Because of the slope of my yard, my pool is about 2 feet buried on one side. I ran a perforated pipe around it, covered it with rocks and then covered with a light layer of mulch. It's been 4 years and so far so good, time will tell.
