Pool pump stops and restarts by itself

We've had our pool for about three years and all of the sudden this year the pump decided to run for about an hour, stop for 15-20 minutes and start again by itself. This has been going on for a month. Today it will only run for about 20 minutes before shutting down for 15-20 minutes and restarting again.

It is running on by itself on a separate circuit, no extension cord.

(24' round pool, 1.5HP single-speed Hayward pump, no chlorinator)

That could be a loose connection or the motor overheat protection kicking in.

Thanks for the information JL. It is what we suspected.

Is there anything that can be done to fix this or prevent it?

I would replace pump if you can afford it.now that swim season is about over depending on where you live,check your local pool store for a pump on sale.
