HEY!
We're getting ready to have a 14x28 inground installed this fall............we are current users of an 18x33-52"
above ground.........we are getting mixed info about pumps.......the one co. want's us to use the inteli flow, variable speed for a $900. premium..........is it worth it?
Also, what about the cartridge filters? We've been using sand for 12yrs.
What size pump does everyone recommend for this size pool? 3ft -5ft depth........14x28
They are using pentair  products in our area now.............

The payback breakpoint for the variable speed pumps is if your electric cost are about 22¢ per kwh. If it's less than that you're better off with a 2-speed pump. Since they're using Pentair, the Whisperflo WFDS-3 or the WFDS-24 are good choices. They're the same pump just rated differently.

This is somewhat generalized but one of our forum members, mas985, has done some rather extensive work on pool pumps, etc. and I believe he would say that you will not get your money back on a VS pump unless your electric rates a pretty high.

I would suggest a 1hp two-speed as a better option. Even a .75hp single speed is a workable option.

Secondly, if you have been happy with sand, don't change. Sand and Cartridge filters have different characteristics but if you are used to one kind, you won't like the other.
