O.K. guys, this is interesting. I have a fishy smell coming from my pool and I have a SWG (Eco Matic ESC 36). My chlorine level is <.4 and my salt level is at 5880 ppm. I was told I need to shock the pool. I have never heard of the SWG not working if the salt levels are too High or low. What should I do to best fit my needs?

You certainly will need to shock. Before you do that, it would be a good idea to get a full set of water test results and post them. There is likely to be something out of balance other than just salt.

How did you determine the salt was at 5880? That is too high for the cell controller to compensate for. The water is too conductive. The salt cell would draw too much current for the power supply. The controller is designed to shut off the cell to prevent the transformer from burning out.
If your salt truly is 5880 ppm, you will need to dilute . Dumping 25% of your water and replacing it and then repeating that process will safely bring you to about 3500, a more normal level. This will change your other chem levels too, such as CYA, CH, and borates (if used).
How did you get to 5880 to begin with? If this was test right after you added more than 40 lbs of salt, wait a day and retest the salt level before diluting. You may have hit a high salt spot. It takes some time for the salt to become evenly distributed.
