DE going back into the pool

I have a 1971 Sta Rite spin filter. I noticed when adding de into the filter it would blow back into the pool (frustrating). So I have replaced all of my grids. But, there still seems to be DE going back into the pool. Do I add the DE in normal run mode or should it be on a different setting?

Back in where? Does it come out the returns, or one of the drains/skimmers?

Yes, you add DE while the filter is on normal/filter mode. Also, make sure you have let all of the air out of the filter.
