Check and Recheck your Pool Construction!!

After what we are going through with our inground pool I feel compelled to write this post . If it prevents one other family from having a disaster in their back yard like we have. First off we checked references , we were showed a paper that was our pb license and insurance , the problem is we did not verify this info through our state board. DO THIS!! Our pb was very likable and we thought honest and hard working. KEEP IT PROFESSIONAL!! Watch every step of construction. Be sure EVERY support arm is in place, that your steps are supported properly , and that your pool is BACKFILLED PROPERLY. Make sure you have good drainage away from your pool , And that your concrete is being poured under the right conditions , and that the ground beneath it has been filled--compacted and is not going to settle anymore. These simple things will save you a lot of headaches down the road. If you question a part of the construction ask ,ask, ask until you find someone who can tell you if this is being done correctly. If your pb seems offended that you are questioning him then you probably need to ask more questions. A reputable builder will welcome your questions and be eager to answer them. Everyone we know who has a pool LOVES IT , we are just an example of what can go wrong .

Sorry to hear about your bad experience.

Might I also add something about not paying a ridiculous amount of money up front (not sure what the norm is for pools) and if a serious problem appears don't be afraid to put a stop to everything until it's straightened out. Easier to deal with the back lash of stopping a construction job (which as the owner and bill payer you have the right to do) instead of dealing with a finished job that needs to be ripped apart and corrected.

You are absolutely right about not paying a bunch of money of front. We paid our PB in draws once certain aspects were completed. The problem we had was not knowing what to look for and trusting our PB too much . We should have had someone who was objective that could have told us "yes ,that is the way it should be done" or "no, you may want to have them redo that " . Educate yourself on how other people are building their pools . I wish we would have known about this forum before we even broke ground , it would have helped us tremendously!
