Skimmer Closest To Pump Sucking 90% Air 10%Water

Help!!!!! we have a 20x40 double roman Inground vinyl liner pool that is 3 years old. 2 skimmers, main drain and 1 light. 5 foot retaining wall on side furthest from pump. Last fall we had all concrete decking and cantilever coping removed due to excessive settling (looked like a roller coaster in some spots); have not put new concrete deck down to allow for more settling since our builder backfilled with dirt and some gravel but mostly dirt on retaining wall side. To make a long story short we have suspected leak since pool deck was poured and we were dumb enough to believe our pool guy that an inch of water loss a day is normal. Took matters into our own hands and went looking for leak since no concrete.
    Findings:
1: Hayward light body had large crack on top---applied two part epoxy that is holding for now
2: Water still evident in this area even with light fixed on outside wall of pool
3: 1 inch water loss in 12 hours with light fixed , dye test did not show significant findings
4: Skimmer closest to pump is sucking tremendous amount of air even though adequate water level present
; Other skimmer is not doing this, just happened over night
5: Excessive bubbles only in step jets (2) and not other jets (2) or thing you hook auto vacuum line to (sorry i don't know the term) ; running on main drain now with skimmers closed --bubbles still in step jets
Note to self: You get what you pay for, it only costs you more in the long run
What is going on????? We are ready to fill this night mare in with dirt

Re: SKIMMER CLOSEST TO PUMP SUCKING 90% AIR 10%WATER

    First, welcome!

Sorry to hear you're having trouble and anxiety. I had many sleepless nights during our pool build. I have no idea about correcting your problem, but some one here will chime in soon.

Did you take pictures during the build? If so, posting them on a photo share site so the construction guys can take a look may be helpful.

Wish I could help more. Hope all gets fixed so you all can get into the water!!!

When you say the skimmer is sucking air are you seeing this air suckage at the skimmer itself or is this evident when the water from this skimmer assembly reaches the pump?

If you have a vortex in your skimmer causing it to suck in air,You could add water and see if you are able to get it to stop.

Is the weir in the skimmer working freely and correctly.

Still waiting on a different pool company to come and give his opinion on what we need to do with our pool. Hopefully he will give us some new insight on what needs to be done. If only the weather would cooperate so he can do a full inspection.

Re: Skimmer Closest To Pump Sucking 90% Air 10%Water

Appears all of our problems stem from light niche that has been leaking like we suspected since concrete was poured . Light was not leaking at conduit like pb has been telling us for the last couple of years , no evidence of repair work in this area of light . What is evident are repairs unsuccessfully attempted inside niche to cover cracks and broken seal at wall ,niche junction . PB has blamed electrician for damaging conduit junction and causing leak , there is no damage .PB has never mentioned the cracks that he has been trying to repair. All of the leaking caused the improper fill under concrete and cantilever to settle . Yesterday we realized the deep end appears off level because the "A" arm turnbuckle supports were not installed and allowed the wall to tilt out towards the backfill area due to wait of concrete shifting. Of the 20 supports our specs called for we have 8 . We only had 1 support in the deep end and no supports around our steps . Very frustrated that this nightmare could have been prevented if someone had done the right thing and taken just a little pride in their work . Not sure what direction we will take now , discussing possible avenues of recourse . Huge Lesson Learned

WOW, I see a rebuild in your future! I guess the big question is whether there will need to be a law suit to get the build going or not. Seems like your builder tried to cut a few dozen corners.
