Pool ladder grips?

I've been looking for some protective grips for my inground metal pool ladders. I see them for sale at many pool supply places online, but the cost seems expensive -- not to mention most sites do not specify if the price is for one handle or for a set. (I am guessing they are sold individually, based on some reviews I've been seeing.)

Has anyone come up with a different solution for protecting ladder handles? My main issue is that the ladders get too hot in the sun ...

I have used the foam that covers/insulates pipes --just use a few tie wraps to hold it in place.. may not be pretty--but it serves the purpose and replaced easily each season.

Thanks, great idea! Why didn't I think of that? I really don't need pretty, just functional!
